Tune-Up

Making Engines Run Great
Motor Works excels at making engines run great. We have been serving DeKalb and Northern Illinois since 1984, and have three ASE Master Certified Specialists on staff.

NEWS FLASH! TUNE-UPS NO LONGER FIX BROKEN CARS!
It sounds counterintuitive but let me explain. Prior to 1981 and the advent of nearly universal automotive computerization, cars had many components that could cause them to run poorly when worn. These included points, condenser, distributor cap, rotor, wires, air filter, fuel filter, and more. Frequent replacement of these parts, and careful adjustment of of tune-up specs was critical.

Historically, customers asked for a tune-up when their older cars misbehaved and it often helped. Today’s modern cars do not have most of these parts. If they run poorly or the check engine light is on, thorough diagnostic testing is now required. Tune-Ups No Longer Fix Broken Cars! What remains of a tune-up is now called an Engine Preventative Maintenance Service. It consists of replacing the common parts shown in our photo, like the engine air filter, cabin air filter, fuel filter and spark plugs. There are no adjustments, the computer handles it all.

When To Do What
The engine air filter should be inspected every 3,000 miles during each oil change. Cabin air filters are replaced every 10,000 miles. The fuel filter should be replaced at 30,000 mile intervals. Spark plugs must be done every 60,000 miles regardless of what the manufacturer recommends. If left in longer than that, they may seize in the engine and break when removed. Performing an Engine Preventative Maintenance Service helps keep engine power and gas mileage at their peak.

Decarbonization
Putting your foot to the floor out on a lonely highway has always been referred to as “Blowing the cobs out of the engine!” It has never worked well. Luckily, today’s modern fuel injection cleaning systems really do the job. Motor Work’s state-of-the-art tools clean the injectors, intake, and engine carbon. If used every 30,000 miles it keeps engine power at its peak. We often find it will produce up to a three mile per gallon improvement in gas mileage and improve idle quality. Let Motor Works return your engine to top efficiency.
