Saab

A Saab (Sob) Story
Sorry, I couldn’t resist the pun as it is so appropriate, but let me digress for a moment. Since March, 1984, Motor Works has been serving the DeKalb and Northern Illinois public. We are a one-stop-shop offering every conceivable automotive amenity. A critical part of that commitment is Saab service and repair. Towards that end, we have three ASE Master Certified Specialists on staff.

An Odd Duck!
The first Saab I ever worked on was a late 70’s Model 99. What an odd duck! It had early Bosch fuel injection. The engine was fitted backwards, with the fan belts back by the windshield and the clutch by the radiator. The entire engine oil pan was the transmission which drove the front wheels. And the ignition key fit a lock between the front seats to start the car.

What A Shame
General Motors sold Saab in 2010 to Dutch Spyker Cars who soon declared bankruptcy. Factory support, including warranty service ended with that sale. Many new owners were caught unaware and left out in the cold.

Enter The Dealership Alternative: Motor Works
We still work on these strong, handsome, and unique cars. Parts are becoming harder to get, but we have developed excellent sources over the years. Our inventive repairs are keeping many an owner on the road.

Experience and Training
Up to the time of their recent closure, Saabs have employed the latest automotive technology, often in quirky and unusual ways. Our constant training from GM and Bosch, the brand’s parent group and largest parts supplier, have helped us stay current with their modern systems. Plus, the Motor Works staff has long experience with these cars and their idiosyncrasies. Our commitment to the brand includes thousands of dollars of unique tooling and computer scanners.

Saab owners in DeKalb and Northern Illinois choose Motor Works because of our reputation for excellence, we hope you’ll choose us too.

Flash! Saab Is Back In Production!
Well, sort of. National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS) has purchased what remained of Saab. They resumed full production of the Model 9-3 in December, 2013. Their intention is to have a full supply chain while R&D continues on new NEVS products.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and express several personal viewpoints. Please remember I really like Saabs, and would consider owning one if the situation were different:
- Don’t hold your breath on American factory support for parts or warranty service anytime soon.
- Don’t buy any Saab new or used at any price. The future for parts is too uncertain.
- Consider selling your Saab. I strongly suspect the parts situation will worsen quickly.
I wish I had better news. I like being a hero. But I have to protect my customers by giving them an honest assessment based on over 30 years’ experience with this delightful car.

I’ll close by addressing Saab owners everywhere. Remember, Motor Works supports the Saab product with enthusiasm. We are here for you!
